CHAPTER FIVE
Two months later Teri sat beside the swimming pool at Stephanos's villa on the island of Skios reading a letter. It was from her brother Dick, and the light flippant way in which he wrote made her mouth curve in a smile of affection.
He had managed to get through the last year at school without dishonouring the name of Hayton and hoped to do fairly well in his 'A' level exams. He hoped to go and work at Hayton's after leaving school. He had excelled himself at sports and hoped Teri would come to Brookhill for the annual sports day to see him perform in the running races. He expected to win both the mile and the fifteen thousand metres. Hadn't he read somewhere that Damien Nikerios had once been a runner and had once taken part in the Olympic marathon as well as having represented Greece in various athletics meetings when he had been younger?
Teri lowered the letter and stared frowningly at the glinting water of the pool. Damien a runner? He had never said anything to her about taking part in the Olympic Games. Neither had anyone else. But she remembered suddenly his reply to the comments she had made about him being a fast runner, the morning after their first meeting. 'I'm not as fast as I was,' he had said casually.
Leaning back, she closed her eyes. The June sun was hot and soon she would have to take cover in the house, but meanwhile she had a few moments to her-self for sun-worship. The air was heady with the scent of flowers which were blooming profusely in the courtyard gardens and beyond the walls the pines soughed softly in the sea breeze.
Damien an athlete. Yes, knowing now so intimately the muscular perfection of his physique, knowing how he loved to swim and dive, having seen him dance bouzouki in island tavernas when they were on their honeymoon, keeping up with and even often surpassing local-fishermen renowned for their stamina, it was easy to believe.
But he had never told her. In fact he had told her very little about himself, was not a great talker, so that when they had returned from the two-week cruise they had taken among the Aegean islands on the Nikerios motor yacht, Teri had known no more about him than when they had left.
Yet it had been a time out of mind, their so-called honeymoon, and looking back now it seemed to her that those two weeks had been among the happiest of her life and memories of it often flicked before her mind's eye like photographic slides. It had been a time she would remember always, no matter what happened in the future.
Leaving Piraeus, they had made their way leisurely among the islands. One of her favourites had been Delos with its remnants of past glory, the marble fragments of ancient temples, exquisite mosaics, a place of silent ruins adorned by a row of marble lions, glowing in the rosy light of the setting sun.
